Description

The diamond python is the cool-climate aristocrat of the carpet complex: midnight black scales, each one starred with yellow, arranged into the rosettes that give the species its name. Diamonds are unusual among pythons — they come from temperate south-eastern Australia and actually need things cooler than their tropical cousins, which makes them a refreshingly economical snake to heat in a European home. This adult male is captive-bred, well-established, and feeding on defrosted rodents.

Diamond Python Care Basics

The golden rule with diamonds: do not keep them like tropical carpets. They need a short daily basking window rather than all-day heat, genuinely cool nights, and a distinct cool winter rest period — chronic overheating is the one mistake that shortens their long lives. Feed modestly; an adult male needs a rodent only every three to four weeks in the warm season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is cool-keeping so important?

Diamonds evolved around Sydney’s latitude, not the tropics. Kept cool and cycled seasonally they routinely pass 25 years; kept hot they decline early. It’s the whole secret to the species.

Is a male diamond a good display snake?

Outstanding — diamonds perch in the open more than most pythons, and the starred pattern under a good light is unmatched in the hobby.

Can he join a breeding plan?

Yes — adult males are ready to pair after proper winter cooling. We can talk you through the seasonal cycle that triggers courtship.
