Description

Amethystine Python — the amethystine or scrub python, Australia’s longest snake, wearing an iridescent purple sheen over olive-gold scales that gives the species its gemstone name. Scrubs are alert, intelligent, athletic pythons for experienced keepers who want serious length without massive bulk.

At a Glance

Species Simalia kinghorni (amethystine / scrub python)
Adult size 3–5 m — long and lean rather than heavy
Lifespan 20–30 years
Enclosure 200×90×90 cm+ with strong elevated perching
Temps / humidity Basking 32–33 °C, ambient 26 °C; 60–70 %
Experience level Advanced — large-snake experience expected

Care Basics

Scrubs combine carpet-python husbandry with big-snake logistics: robust anchored branching (they climb at every size), a large water vessel, and disciplined hook-training from day one — the feeding response is world-class. Feed lean; a scrub python should look like a whip, not a sausage. Two-person handling above three metres is basic sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do scrubs compare to olive pythons?

Longer, lighter and more arboreal, with a sharper, more athletic temperament — a keeper’s snake rather than a beginner-friendly giant.

Is the purple sheen real?

Completely — it’s structural iridescence, strongest just after shed and in natural light.
