Description

Black Headed Python – female — Aspidites melanocephalus, the python with the lacquered jet-black head over fine gold-and-charcoal banding. That black head is solar tech (BHPs bask by exposing just the head from cover), and it belongs to one of the most personable large-bodied pythons in the hobby, sharing the famously level Aspidites temperament with its woma cousin.

At a Glance

Species Aspidites melanocephalus (black-headed python)
Adult size 1.5–2.5 m
Lifespan 25–30 years
Enclosure 150×60×50 cm; floor-space priority
Temps / humidity Hot basking surface 33–35 °C; dry (30–50 %)
Experience level Intermediate

Care Basics

Deep dry substrate, a hot stone the head can press against, snug hides, disciplined portions — BHPs gain weight easily, so feed adults every two to three weeks by body condition. They’re ground-dwellers with real strength and real curiosity; expect the black head periscoping to watch you within a week of settling in. Keep them dry; chronic humidity is the species’ one enemy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are BHPs aggressive?

Keen feeders, calm handlers — hook-tapping at the door keeps the two completely separate. Defensive bites are rare in captive-bred animals.

BHP or woma?

Same easy-going genus; the BHP adds size, presence and that unforgettable head. Many keepers of one eventually own both.
