Description

Diamond python hatchlings — Morelia spilota spilota, the cool-climate aristocrat: midnight scales, each starred in yellow, arranged into the rosettes that name the species. Diamonds come from temperate south-eastern Australia and actually need things cooler than tropical pythons — economical to heat, spectacular to display, and very long-lived when kept correctly.

Care Basics

The golden rule: do not keep diamonds like tropical carpets. A limited basking window, genuinely cool nights, a distinct cool winter, and sparing meals (adults eat every three to four weeks in season) are the entire secret to their famous longevity. They perch in the open more than most pythons — a natural display species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is cool-keeping so critical?

Diamonds evolved at Sydney’s latitude. Kept cool and seasonally cycled they routinely pass 25 years; kept hot year-round they decline early.

Are diamonds handleable?

Yes — typically steady and deliberate, especially animals raised with regular calm contact.
