Description

Diamond python juveniles — Morelia spilota spilota, the cool-climate aristocrat: midnight scales, each starred in yellow, arranged into the rosettes that name the species. Diamonds come from temperate south-eastern Australia and actually need things cooler than tropical pythons — economical to heat, spectacular to display, and very long-lived when kept correctly.

At a Glance

Species Morelia spilota spilota (diamond python)
Adult size 1.8–2.4 m
Lifespan 25–30+ years kept cool
Enclosure 120–150 cm, well-ventilated, with perches
Temps Short daily basking window 29–31 °C; cool ambients; cold winter rest
Experience level Intermediate

Care Basics

The golden rule: do not keep diamonds like tropical carpets. A limited basking window, genuinely cool nights, a distinct cool winter, and sparing meals (adults eat every three to four weeks in season) are the entire secret to their famous longevity. They perch in the open more than most pythons — a natural display species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is cool-keeping so critical?

Diamonds evolved at Sydney’s latitude. Kept cool and seasonally cycled they routinely pass 25 years; kept hot year-round they decline early.

Are diamonds handleable?

Yes — typically steady and deliberate, especially animals raised with regular calm contact.
