Description

The frilled lizard needs no introduction — it’s the dinosaur of every documentary, the lizard that unfurls a parasol of skin and sprints on two legs. What the documentaries don’t show is what a rewarding captive it makes: an alert, tree-hugging showpiece that tames down well with routine and turns a tall vivarium into living theatre. This animal is European captive-bred and feeding on dusted insects.

Frilled Lizard Care Basics

Build upward: frillies live vertically, clinging high on broad trunks and descending mainly to feed. Position the basking zone and UVB at the upper third, keep humidity tropical with morning misting, and feed dusted roaches and crickets with variety. The frill display is a stress signal — a settled frilled lizard that never shows it is a happy one, which surprises new owners in the best way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it display the frill on demand?

No — and you shouldn’t want it to. Displays mean alarm. You’ll see it occasionally during territorial moods; the rest of the time you get a calm, prehistoric-looking companion.

Are frilled lizards handleable?

With patient, routine-based interaction, yes — many become relaxed about stepping onto arms. They’re a watch-first, handle-second species.

What’s the biggest husbandry mistake?

Housing them in wide, short enclosures. Height, vertical trunks and high heat are what this species is built for.
