Description

No snake on Earth out-displays a green tree python at rest: coiled in a perfect saddle over a branch, head centred, in a green that looks freshly enamelled. Chondros are the species keepers graduate to — not because they’re fragile (modern captive-bred animals are far hardier than their reputation), but because they reward precision. Get humidity, ventilation and perch placement right and you own the most beautiful display python in the world.

This animal is European captive-bred — never imported — and feeding on defrosted rodents from the perch.

At a Glance

Species Morelia viridis (green tree python)
Adult size 1.5–1.8 m
Lifespan 15–20+ years
Enclosure 90×60×90 cm with horizontal perch grid

Humidity 60–80 % cycling — mist, then allow to dry
Diet Defrosted rodents offered at perch height
Experience level Advanced (or a meticulous intermediate)

Green Tree Python Care Basics

The three rules of chondro keeping: humidity that cycles rather than stagnates, ventilation that prevents respiratory trouble, and perches placed so the snake can thermoregulate without leaving them. Handle sparingly — this is a perch animal, not a hands-on pet — and feed modestly, as chondros are prone to obesity. Do those four things and the species is far easier than its mystique suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a green tree python really that difficult?

European captive-bred animals like ours are dramatically hardier than the wild imports that built the old reputation. Careful, consistent keepers succeed routinely.

Can I handle it?

Occasionally and gently — support the whole body and never pull a gripping tail from the perch. It tolerates handling; it doesn’t seek it.

Will the colour change?

If you ever acquire a juvenile, yes — they hatch yellow or red and turn green over 6–12 months. Adults like this one are in their permanent colour.
