Description

Australia’s second-largest python, in its most beautiful finish: the olive python wears thousands of small, high-gloss scales in a seamless bronze-olive sheet that looks liquid in sunlight. Olives are the “gentle giant” of Australian herpetoculture — genuinely large, yet renowned for a steady, deliberate temperament that makes a well-handled adult one of the most impressive calm snakes a keeper can own.

This animal is European captive-bred and feeding reliably on defrosted rats.

Olive Python Care Basics

Plan around water and strength: olives are semi-riparian and will soak, so a large, heavy water tub is essential, and every fixture must be anchored. Feed deliberately — a large rat every two to three weeks for adults — and always hook-tap before opening the enclosure; olives have a strong, honest feeding response and perfect manners once they know food isn’t coming. Two-person handling is sensible above three metres.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an olive python manageable for a home keeper?

Yes, for a keeper with large-snake experience and the space. They’re far more tractable than their size suggests — but the size is real.

How fast do they grow?

Quickly in years one to three; most reach two metres by 24 months on moderate feeding.

What’s the temperament honestly like?

Food-keen at the enclosure door, calm in the hand. The species’ reputation as a gentle giant is earned — with routine handling.
